Mark 16: The Gospel of the Second Chance

Not many second chances exist in the world today. Not in “a dog-eat-dog world.” It’s more like, “Shape up or ship out.” “It’s now or never.” “Three strikes and you’re out.” Do you remember getting cut from the little league? How about getting rejected by colleges? Never getting a call for that job? Getting the pink slip? Getting dumped for “someone else”?

It’s not everyday that you find someone who will give you a second chance-much less someone who will give you a second chance everyday. But in Jesus, Peter found both.

In this brief post-resurrection account, we find the gospel of the second chance. Do you see it? It’s found in that beautiful phrase spoken by the angel. “But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee” (16:7). Why does the angel single out Peter? Because of what happened in chapter 14...when Peter denied Jesus-not once, not twice, but three times!

The angel’s message? “Be sure to tell Peter that he gets to bat again. The world may say, ‘Three strikes and you’re out,’ but God says, ‘You get another chance.’”

Isn’t that the whole point of the cross? God giving us a second chance despite our sins and failures? God could have just written us off. But He didn’t. Instead He gave us His Son. And through His death and resurrection, God gives us a perfect redemption and a new life. No matter how badly we’ve fallen. No matter how many times we’ve fallen.

It’s not everyday that you find someone who will give you a second chance-much less someone who will give you a second chance everyday. But in Jesus, you find both. He is the God of second chances.
