Reflection on John 17: Continuing Christ's Mission

"As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world" (17:18 NIV).

Do you realize that Jesus' mission is now our mission? That’s because we are His body! Christ's redemptive mission on earth was to reconcile men to God. Having accomplished that mission on the cross, Jesus now commissions us to continue His mission as His ambassadors. "In the same way that you gave me a mission in the world, I give them a mission in the world" (17:18 NLT). So Apostle Paul says:

Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us (2 Cor 5:17-20 NLT).

Jesus not only calls us to come to Him. He commissions us to go for Him. The Great Commission is given to the church. That includes you! God wants to make His appeal through us! He wants to offer peace and reconciliation through us! He wants to use us to make people right with God!

That doesn't mean you have to stop what you're doing and go into "ministry." God wants you to share the good news right where you are. As a student, parent, teacher, doctor, nurse, analyst, or whatever you do, be on the look out for people God places in your path. He's sending you into the world so you can share the gospel with them, through both word and deed.
